Tonights Poetry Event.. A Success..
April 11, 2009
Each time I get the chance to do my poetry I am reminded I have something people want to hear. It was an honor to to host tonight's events. I was able to get in a few pieces tonight. However, the real story was everyone else. Hosting, you have to bring others up to the podium to do their thing. The venue was a small store front book store. Simply Empower is a local organization which offers opportunities for the communities. Those opportunities included make over, financial advice, teen events and of course poetry. With seating for about 25 or so there is an intimate feel when talking to all that are listening. As the host your are right in the mix with all who are there to listen. Tonight, I was able to use my work as the bridge between the others reading. Ken a chiseled framed brother from NJ, was great he is classically trained and you could tell in his delivery of aforementioned training. His words were smooth and thought provoking. He even ended the night in song.. His rendition of an old negro spiritual hit the mark as we closed the evening. We had a young lady Santique, who was fifteen, who penned her piece as she listened to us perform.. When she did her thing you could hear the pain and pride in the words she layed down. She was brave enough to come up in front of all and do a wonderful job. Sherise, one of the young ladies who runs this outstanding organization came the front and read a piece that was done about the organization, aptly named Simply To Empower. Listening to her talk about how she was moved to pick up writing poetry again warmed my heart. Each poet fed of the next. I truly felt as the host that the Lord picked the pieces I needed to have since I was able to read something that fit the conversations each of the poet spoke about as they read. I didn't set up what to say because I didn't know who would take the mic since it was an open mic. I wanted things to flow and I believe we reached that point together.. Last but not lease, my wife. I called her to come up and read her piece which is in my book. Her poem speaks to her feelings about me. She named the piece "A Big Dog's Passion" Now I talk about my wife every chance I get, yet hearing her read was moving. Hearing her words reminds me of why I have to take care of her feelings and protect her heart. Tonight might not have been filled with many people but it was filled with a great energy. There was love and respect in the room. The young folks were there tapped into the stream of energy. Tonight's show was were able to show our younger generation there is need for a bridge from them to our past. As well as us, the elders seeing how talented our children can be when properly motivated. Poetry helped with the understanding on both sides of the divide.
My book has allowed me to go a few places I might have never been able to go. When I hear someone say one of my pieces made them cry because it touched them as they reflected on their lives. A young brother who works with Simply Empowered purchased a book and said he was touched tonight with my words. One of the biggest compliments was from Ken, he mentioned how he truly enjoyed listening to me and he wants to know more about publishing his work. This talented man reacted to my work in such a positive way it was truly humbling. Brothers have to use their talents as means to support themselves and assisting others. I truly pray I am able to help Ken get his work published. He is truly a talented poet with a style people who love a smooth older style of delivery would come to love. I am going to continue to look for local events to get my words and books out there. I felt the Lord working with me tonight and I am sure he is not done with me..
Thank You Simply To Empower for allowing me to come by and share in this electric experience..
