"Don’t Pass Me By" by K. L. Belvin

Excuse me, do you have a second.
You gaze at me as if my face has no features; there is a human underneath all this.
So, you’re better than me, as if this was my dream when I skipped to school alongside you.
Look deeper, we are not that different; we are only a few mistakes and couple of pay checks away from each other.
Food has lost its taste. I eat to survive. Can you relate as you order lunch?
How dare you think I don’t have feelings; try laying on a box out here on a cold winter’s night see how you’ll feel.
Get a job, you say; how come it’s never, “Do you need some help?” You’re quick to tell but not to offer.
Abuse comes in many forms, some I allowed and others I didn’t sign up for.
Ever fought for a bed, food, sneakers or your pride then told you're worthless after having each one taken?
Oh God, you say as you twist your face. Your God may be good to you, but look up at a large dark sky, in the middle of a cold night, starving, you’ll question does He truly exist.
Well, I have to go, the shelter gives a whole sandwich and juice on Tuesday, plus I can see your latté is getting cold.
Keep me in mind when you say to your children, “Don't waste food children are starving in Africa.” Guess what, they’re really not that far away.
Before you go, let me ask you this; would you please pray for me? Because, each day I ask that someday one of you will stop and talk to me, since many of you don’t hear me when I humbly ask,
“Don’t pass me by!”
How fast do we pass the homeless only to act as if we don’t see or hear their cries for help? We act as though they are not our brothers and sisters who have fallen on hard times. Remember what the Bible says: Hebrews 13 1 Keep on loving each other as brothers. 2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing, some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
